With over 1200 pre-race entries, the DCU Invitational kicked off the school’s 2010 cross country season in fine style – there were no fewer than 8 different schools sharing team honours.
Both Minor races produced impressive individual winners with Cliona Carty (St. Kevin’s Dunlavin) and Brian Mc Grath (St. Pat’s Navan) proving stronger over the last 500m in their respective races. The Minor team titles were won convincingly by St. Mary’s Naas and Willow Park boys.
At Junior level, Sarah Fitzpatrick (Our Lady’s Terenure) made a bold move for home approaching half way and was never headed while Aaron Hanlon (St. Mary’s Drogheda) led from start to finish. Mount Sackville, with 4 scorers in 13 (27pts) recorded the lowest team score of the day in the girls race while St. Fintan’s HS Sutton (73pts) edged out St. Malachy’s Belfast (75pts) in the boys race.
Siofra Cleirigh Buttner (Colaiste Iosagain) didn’t hang around in the Inter girl’s race and led her school Iosagain to an impressive team title. Stephen Attride (Knockbeg College) was always in control in the Inter boy’s race. St. Aidan’s CBS picked up their first team title of the day from the Carlow boys!!
The final two Senior races saw impressive runs from DSD club mates Niamh Denny (Our Lady’s Grove) and Emmet Jennings (Oatlands College) who both stormed to victories in the latter half of their races. The girls from Loreto Foxrock won the senior team title while the boys from Knockbeg College in Carlow gained sweet revenge over the St. Aidan’s CBS in the senior boy’s team race.
This was the 6th running of the DCU Schools Invitational – and their most impressive to date. A great day of athletics was enjoyed by many on a crisp day in late January.

Leinster athletes perform with great distinction at the Schools Senior Cross Country International at Brecon in Wales.
Girls Race
The Girls race was led early on by the Welsh athlete Bethany Davies with Linda Byrne and Frances Ni Reamoin closing her down towards the end of the first lap. Behind these three, the Irish girls packed well with Ciara Durkin and Maria Halley running together followed closely by Aisling Baker, Tracey Williams and Nicola Fallon. Cora Russell who was recovering from flu, was chasing in the next group. Over the final 800m, Linda (14.33) stretched away from Frances (14.39), with Bethany 3rd for Wales in 15.02. The remaining Irish athletes finished : Maria 4th, Ciara 5th, Aisling 6th, Tracey 7th, Nicola 10th and Cora 23rd. The team result was never in doubt with the Irish Schools clear winners from the AA Wales team and the Welsh Schools. It is most noticeable that seven of the team are all Leinster athletes.
Boys Race
Mark Hanrahan from Cork was the early leader of this race and was joined by Andrew Ledwith in a leading group of 6 athletes by the end of lap 1. As the race settled down, Andrew and Mark surged ahead while further down the field the Irish team were moving through strongly, with Leinster athletes Danny Darcy and Brian Kirwan racing shoulder to shoulder and Colm Turner, Evan Scully, James Mc Carthy and Richie Yeates all chasing hard in the top 15. Andrew (17.29) turned on the fireworks over the last lap and won easily from Mark (17.50). Danny (17.52) had a great tussle for 3rd with Oliver Holden form Wales. Kirwan (18.05), Turner (18.09), Scully (18.15), Mc Carthy (18.17) and Yeates (19.07) finished in this order. The team result was another easy victory for the Irish. Again, Leinster athletes made up half of the Irish team.
Incidentally, Billy Delaney from Carlow was the Team Manager while Enda Fitzpatrick was Boys Coach (and part-time photographer on the run).
